This guide tries to give beginners a few quick tips to make Foresight look even better than it already does out of the box. Any other ideas or suggestions, feel free to edit them in ![]()
- Turn on Compiz OpenGL desktop effects. This will give you awesome things like wobbly windows and the desktop cube, etc. To do this , make sure you have your video drivers installed and working, then go up to System on your menu bar, Preferences, then GL Desktop. Now all you have to do is check the "Enable GL Desktop" button and you should be set.
- Install Affinity and AWN. Affinity is a "start menu" like the one used in SLED 10, and is OpenGL based as is AWN. AWN, or Avant Window Navigator, is a launcher similar to OSX's dock. Combine both of these and you have a very good looking and intuitive way to access anything you can think of on your pc.
sudo conary update avant-window-navigator affinity
To access affinity, right click on a panel, then go to "Add to panel", then scroll down and click on "The Affinity Search Menu", then click add. Also be sure that you add "avant-window-navigator" to your autostart list (System -> Preferences -> Sessions, then click on "New") Now, to make awn into a panel so that it does not overlap windows at the bottom, fire up gconf-editor (from a terminal) and navigate to apps -> avant-window-navigator, then on the right, check "panel mode".
- Check out themes at art.gnome.org and gnome-look.org. I really like the "Glossy" theme that comes with Foresight in "System -> Preferences-> Theme". And remember, most icons now are "stretchable", and big icons are cool
